Chelsea will begin their preparations for the new season with a friendly against Mexican outfit Club America at Allegiant Stadium on Saturday night. The Mexican club are in the midst of their domestic league and are heading into the match on the back of a narrow 1-0 win to Toluca in the Liga MX fixture last Thursday. The Blues failed to win any major silverware last season and finished third in the Premier League standings, 19 points behind title winners Manchester City. Thomas Tuchel’s side began the last term with two title triumphs in the UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup, but then were knocked out of the Champions League by Real Madrid in the quarter-finals and lost the FA Cup final against Liverpool on penalties .

Chelsea’s performance in the transfer market so far has been pretty hot and cold, as they have managed to pull through a big signing, but at the same time, few stalwarts have left the club. Raheem Sterling was the first arrival from Manchester City and it is believed that Napoli-man Kalidou Koulibaly could soon arrive at Stamford Bridge. Meanwhile striker Romelu Lukaku has returned to Inter Milan while central defender’s Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen have left the club to join Real Madrid and Barcelona respectively.

As for Club America, they are currently sitting at the sixth spot in the 16-team table with four points from three games. The Eagles began their domestic campaign with a goalless draw against Atlas on July 3 before suffering a 3-2 defeat to Monterrey in the second match a week later. And then, Richard Sanchez’ lone strike in the injury time helped the Eagles secure their first win of the season against Toluca. Fernando Ortiz’ side will also face Manchester City and Real Madrid in friendlies before resuming their domestic season against Tijuana on July 24.

Chelsea fans would be eager to watch Sterling’s debut for the Blues and how the England international would fit into Tuchel’s plans. The departure of Rudiger and Christensen has left a huge void in the defence and as of now, Sarr is likely to partner Thiago Silva at the heart of the back-four. The midfield duo of N’Golo Kante and Ruben Loftus Cheek are unavailable due to their COVID-19 vaccination status. As for Club Colombia, Martinez is expected to lead the attack with Garcia, Valdes and Damm in support. Fidalgo and Sanchez could sit in front of the back-four and pull the strings.
