Charlotte FC will host Chelsea in a pre-season friendly at Bank Of America Stadium on Wednesday night. It will be Chelsea’s second friendly of the summer, having won the first game 2-1 against Club America last Saturday, while the hosts are in the midst of their Major League Soccer (MLS) season. Charlotte are heading into the match on the back of a 3-2 defeat at Inter Miami in an MLS fixture four days ago. The hosts are playing in their first ever MLS season this term, having been formed only in 20019. Christian Lattanzio’s side have picked up 26 points from 21 games to sit eighth in the Estern Conference table consisting of 14 teams.

Yordy Reyna netted a brace for Charlotte in the previous game, but goals from Robert Taylor, Gonzalo Higuain and Emerson Rodriguez helped Inter Miami take all three points. Despite suffering a narrow defeat, it wasn’t a great performance from the Crown, as they managed to create just four goal-scoring opportunities in the entire match compared to 15 by Inter Miami. After the friendly against the Blues, Charlotte will resume their MLS season with a trip to Toronto.
Chelsea, on the other hand, began their preparation for the 2022-23 season with a victory against Club America. Last Saturday, at Allegiant Stadium, Timo Werner and Mason Mount netted on either side of Reece James’ own goal to secure the victory. It was a dominant performance from Thomas Tuchel’s side as they recorded eight shots on target compared to zero by their opponents. The Blues will also take on Arsenal and Udinese in the coming weeks before beginning their new Premier League season at Everton on August 6.

Charlotte boss Lattanzio could rotate his squad in order to give some rest to his players after an energy sapping encounter against Inter Miami a few days ago. Ada Armour and Vinicius Mello are sidelined with injuries Reyna, who netted a brace in the last game is once again expected to operate on the flanks. As for Chelsea, Tuchel could also rotate the squad in order to build the match-fitness of the team. Edouard Mendy, Reece James, Mount and Jorginho are expected to come into the playing eleven. Central defender Kalidou Koulibaly, who joined the club from Napoli a few days ago is likely to get some game-time, while another new signing Raheem Sterling is also expected to feature against the Crown.
