Canada managed to accumulate 28 points from 14 games to secure top spot in the North American qualification group, consisting of eight teams, level on points with second-placed Mexico, but separated by goal-difference. The North America outfit is currently ranked 43rd in the FIFA World Rankings. After the culmination of World Cup qualifiers, John Herdman’s side registered one win and a defeat against Curacao (4-0) and Honduras (2-1) respectively in the CONCACAF Nations League fixtures in June. Jonathan David’s 86th-minute goal against Honduras, proved to be just a consolation.
Qatar, on the other hand, didn’t have to earn their place through qualification because they are the host nation. The Maroons, who won the Asia Cup in 2019, have played four friendlies in less than a month, while competing in 30 international fixtures since March 2021. Qatar’s last notable friendly was against Jamaica on August 26, which ended in a 1-1 draw after Jourdaine Fletcher’s opener was canceled out by Khalid Mazzeed.
