Qatar are heading into the match on the back of a 3-0 defeat against Croatia U-23 side in a hybrid friendly on Tuesday, while Canada lost 2-1 to Honduras in a CONCACAF Nations League match more than three months ago.
2022 FIFA World Cup hosts Qatar will take on Canada in an international friendly at the Generali Arena in Austria on Friday. Canada secured a spot in the group stages of the global event courtesy of finishing first in the CONCACAF qualifying group. The Maroon, meanwhile, will be taking part in their first ever World Cup finals, as the host nation, since its independence in 1971. Canada managed to accumulate 28 points from 14 games to secure top spot in the North American qualification group, consisting of eight teams, level on points with second-placed Mexico, but separated by goal-difference. The North America outfit is currently ranked 43rd in the FIFA World Rankings. After the culmination of World Cup qualifiers, John Herdman’s side registered one win and a defeat against Curacao (4-0) and Honduras (2-1) respectively in the CONCACAF Nations League fixtures in June. Jonathan David’s 86th-minute goal against Honduras, proved to be just a consolation.
Qatar, on the other hand, didn’t have to earn their place through qualification because they are the host nation. The Maroons, who won the Asia Cup in 2019, have played four friendlies in less than a month, while competing in 30 international fixtures since March 2021. Qatar’s last notable friendly was against Jamaica on August 26, which ended in a 1-1 draw after Jourdaine Fletcher’s opener was canceled out by Khalid Mazzeed.
Canadian striker David, who netted in the defeat against Honduras, is likely to lead the line alongside Larin. Bayern Munich full-back Alphonso Davies is going to be a pivotal figure on the left flank. As for Qatar, Hassan Al-Haydos is expected to captain the side. Akram Afif could lead the line alongside Ali.
Qatar probable starting lineup: Al sheeb, Ahmed, Kheder, Hassan, Khoukhi, Ro-Ro, Hatem, Boudiaf, Assadalla, Ali, Afif
Canada probable starting lineup: Borjan, Laryea, Vitoria, Johnston, Eustaquio, Piette, Hoilett, Buchanan, Davies, Larin, David
