Things will be difficult for Cameroon against the five-time champions, but the African country is still in with a chance of reaching the last 16.
Five-time champions Brazil will face Cameroon in one of the final Group G matches of the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Brazil has already qualified for the tournament’s knockout stages after two convincing victories over Serbia and Switzerland. The men in yellow cruised to a 2-0 victory over Serbia and a 1-0 victory over the Swiss. In the latter, Brazil appeared unsure in the final third, missing several chances. What the team lacks is chance creation, as their midfielders are capable of splitting open any defence in the world cup.
Things will be difficult for Cameroon against the five-time champions, but the African country is still in with a chance of reaching the last 16. They have one point after drawing one match and losing one match. If they defeat Brazil, they will have four points if Serbia defeats Switzerland with a lower goal difference than Cameroon. It will be a difficult task, however, to defeat a team like Brazil.
Rigobert Song’s team rallied from a 3-1 deficit to tie the game at 3-3 after Jean-Charles Castelletto opened the scoring. Cameroon has something to play for on Friday after Vincent Aboubakar and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting scored in quick succession in the second half, demonstrating the tenacity required to get anything against one of the tournament favourites. Here are some of the key battles to look out for.
On paper, the battle between between Vinicius and Fai seems to have one obvious winner in the Real Madrid winger but Collins Fai has had a decent tournament for Cameroon and could be instrumental in stopping the speedy Brazilian. However, that is easier said than done. Vinicius is in the form of his life at the moment, taking on defenders left and right and getting the better of them. The Real Madrid man was undoubtedly one of the most crucial players for the men in yellow in their victories against Serbia and Switzerland and he will be looking to continue that form going forward.
It is unusual to feature a battle between two defensive midfielders in such a list but a battle of who keeps control of the midfield could be quite interesting between Casemiro and Anguissa. The Cameroonian, who plays for Napoli in the Serie A, has the makings of a good CDM and on his day holds the ability to control any match he is put into. However, his mettle will be tested by one of the absolute best in the business, Casemiro. The Manchester United man has been in fine form at the world cup so far, scoring the all important goal against Switzerland alongside performing his midfield duties to near perfection.
Regarded as one of the best defenders of his generation, Marquinhos has so far successfully handled the job of keeping a 100% clean sheet record so far this world cup but he will be tested against his former clubmate, Choupo-Moting. The pair used to play at Paris Saint Germain for a while and they will know quite a lot about each other’s playing styles. The battle promises to be a feisty affair that will have fans licking their lips with anticipation.
