Cleber scored the lone goal of the match as Ceara beat Fortaleza in the Brazil Serie A fixture at Castelao on Wednesday night. It was a dominant performance from Vozao to earn three points and move out of the relegation zone while Fortaleza remained at the bottom of the points table. Although Ceara didn’t have a great start to the match as the hosts created some decent chances, things quickly changed when Fortaleza midfielder Felipe was sent off in the 20th minute for violent misconduct. The hosts now needed to play more than 75 minutes of the game with a man-less and were pushed to the back-foot. Meanwhile immediately after the red card incident, Ceara were forced to substitute injured centre-back Luiz Otavio with Gabriel.

Boeck had a busy night

Mid-way through the first half, Cleber’s attempt from the centre of the box was saved by the home goalkeeper Marcelo Boeck. Meanwhile, on the half-hour-mark, Erick’s left-footed effort from outside the box went just away from the top left corner, following a set piece situation. The visitors kept pushing forward and were getting closer. Lima’s shot from outside the penalty area struck the woodwork. Although Fortaleza were a man-less, they managed to create some decent goal-scoring chances. Hercules’ shot from Moises’ assist missed the target.

Cleber’s goal

In the 11th minute of first-half injury time, Ceara broke the deadlock courtesy of a fine team move.  Vina’s nice first-time flick-pass found Cleber on the edge of the box and the 25-year-old striker made no mistake as he took one touch before slotting home past Boeck into the back of the net. After the break, the visitors came out with more confidence and played more positively. Erick and Vena had their shots saved before Silvio Romero’s effort missed the target. Ceara were in control of the game and although the hosts tried hard for an equaliser, it never came and the match ended in favour of Ceara.
