Bolton Wanderers will host Portsmouth in the EFL Cup quarter-final fixture at University of Bolton Stadium on Tuesday night. The hosts are heading into the match on the back of a goalless League One draw against Plymouth Argyle  last Saturday, while Portsmouth got eliminated from the FA Cup following a 1-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur in the third round fixture, on the same day. Bolton are currently occupying fifth spot in the English third tier standings, having collected 41 points from 25 games, while the visitors, who have three games in hand, are sitting at the 13th position, with 10 points less to their name.

Bolton should be heading into the match high on confidence, having earned a point against league-leaders Plymouth last weekend. Ian Evatt’s side have now kept five clean sheets in their last six outings. Having last won the EFL Trophy back in the 1988-89 season, the Trotters will be desperate to go all the way to Wembley. Portsmouth, on the other hand, won the trophy as early as 2019. Nevertheless, Pompey are going through a tough patch, having not tasted victory in their last five games across all competitions. Last time out, Harry Kane’s lone goal was enough to eliminate Portsmouth at the third round of the FA Cup. Prior to that, Pompey lost 3-1 to Charlton in a league-fixture.
