Bologna will host Cagliari in the second round of the Coppa Italia at Renato Dall’Ara on Thursday night. The hosts are heading into the match on the back of a 3-2 defeat to Napoli in a Serie A fixture on Sunday, while Cagliari got the better of Brescia in a Serie B match on the same day. Bologna had edged past Cosenza 1-0 in the opening round of the cup competition early in August, while the visitors got the better of Perugia 3-1, during the same time period.

Bologna gave a good account of themselves against Serie A leaders Napoli on Sunday. Joshua Zirkzee gave a surprise lead to Thiago Motta’s side five minutes before the break at the Stadio Maradona, before Juan Jesus equalized on the stroke of half-time. Hirving Lozano’s 49th-minute strike put Napoli in front before Musa Barrow made the score 2-2 two minute later. And then, Victor Osimphen’s 69th-minute strike handed Bologna their fifth league-defeat of the campaign.
An inability to keep defensive discipline for a full 90 minutes has been a major problem for the Red and Blues have conceded most goals of any Serie A side in the second half of games this term. Cagliari, on the other hand, have record four wins and two draws from their opening nine Serie B games to be sitting at the eighth position in the Italian second division standings. In their last outing against Brescia, goals from Zito Luwombo and Alessandro Deiola helped the Islanders secure all three points at home.
Bologna probable starting lineup: Bardi, Posch, Soumaoro, Sosa, Lykogiannis, Dominguez, Soriano, Orsolini, Sansone, Barrow, Zirkzee
Cagliari probable starting lineup: Radunovic, Di Pardo, Altare, Capradossi, Barreca, Nandez, Makoumbou, Deiola, Falco, Lapadula, Mancosu
