Benfica will host Portimonense in a Portuguese Primeira Liga fixture at Estadio da Luz on Friday night. Both sides are heading into the match on the back of a defeat at the end of 2022. The hosts were thrashed 3-0 by Braga last Saturday, while Portimonense suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat to Casa Pia, two days earlier. Despite the defeat, Benfica are still occupying top spot in the Portuguese top tier standings, having collected 37 points from 14 games, three clear of Braga, who have played a game more. The visitors, meanwhile, are sitting at the eight position, with 19 points to their name.

Benfica lost to Braga, courtesy of Abel Ruiz’s early opener and Ricardo Horta’s brace. Despite dominating possession, the Eagles failed to take their chances and succumbed to only their first league-defeat of the campaign. Meanwhile, Roger Schmidt’s side have won 12 of their 14 league games this season. The German tactician has moulded a strong attacking unit which has netted 25 goals in their last seven league games. Portimonense, on the other hand, have lost four of their last five games across all competitions. Their latest outing against Casa Pia ended in a 2-1 defeat. Although Luquinha canceled out Neto’s opener, Carnejy Antoine scored the dramatic winner, four minutes into the injury time to hand a second consecutive defeat to Paulo Sergio’s men across all competitions. The Alvinegros Marafados are sitting seven points clear of the relegation zone.
Benfica playmaker Rafa won’t be available for Friday’s game because of suspension, having picked up his fifth yellow card of the season against Braga. Meanwhile, it remains to be seen whether World Cup winner Enzo Fernandez, who is heavily linked with a move to Premier League club Chelsea, will feature in the matchday squad or not. Glanco Ramos is expected to spearhead the attack, with Julian Draxler and David Neres occupying the flanks. As for Portimonense, midfielder Carlinhos is sidelined with injury, while attacker Wlinton Junior is also occupying the treatment room. Yago Cariello, Zie Ouattara and Luquinha could form the attacking trio.
Benfica possible line-up: Vlachodimas, Bah, Silva, Otamendi, Grimaldo, Luis, Aursnes, Neres, Mario, Draxler, Ramos
Portimonense possible line-up: Nakamura, Moufi, Pedrao, Relvas, Seck, Ouattara, Diaby, Klismahn, Ouattara, Cariello, Luquinha
