Benfica will play Fulham in a pre-season friendly at Estadio Algarve on Sunday. Both sides are heading into the match on the back of convincing wins against Nice. Benfica defeated Nice 3-0 on Friday, while the English outfit got the better of the same opponent 2-0 a day later. The Portuguese outfit didn’t have a great 2021-22 campaign, finishing third in the Primeira Liga, collecting 74 points from 34 games, which left them 17 points behind the Champions Porto. Fulham, on the other hand, secured a return to the Premier League for the coming season by winning the Championship last term, finishing at the summit with 90 points from 46 games, two points clear of second-placed Bournemouth.

Benfica began their pre-season with a 2-0 win over Reading on July 9 before getting the better of Nice with a similar scoreline six days later. The Eagles have been busy in the transfer market, signing the likes of David Neres, Enzo Fernandez, Joao vitor, Alexander Bah, Peter Musa and Mihalio Ristic, while striker Darwin Nunez has left the club to join Liverpool in a big-money deal. Roger Schmidt’s side will also take on Newcastle United on July 26 before beginning their new Primeira Liga campaign at home against Arouca on August 7.
Fulham, on the other hand, after the Benfica game, will play Estoril and Villarreal before hosting Liverpool in their Premier League opener on August 7. The London club have been busy in the transfer market, bringing in Joao Palhinha from Sporting Lisbon and Andreas Pereira from Manchester United, while their two major departures have been Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa to Napoli and Fabio Carvalho to Liverpool.
Benfica boss Schmidt is likely to give game-time to most of the new arrivals, in order to help them gel with the team and adapt to the new system. Neres could feature on the right flank with Musa operating down the centre and Ramos occupying the left channel. Fernandez, Mario and Weigl could form the midfield trio. As for Fulham, Silva is expected to rotate the squad as much as possible because the boys were in action 24 hours earlier against Nice. Aleksandar Mitrovic, who netted 43 Championship goals last term, is likely to lead the attack alongside Harry Wilson.
Benfica probable starting lineup: Vlachodimos; Bah, Victor, Otamendi, Grimaldo; Fernandez, Mario, Weigl; Neres, Musa, Ramos
Fulham probable starting lineup: Gazzaniga; Tete, Kongolo, Adarabioyo, Bryan, Palhinha, Reed, Pereira, Reid, Mitrovic, Wilson
