Belgium will be looking to put one step in the knockout stages of the World Cup when they take on Morocco in a Group F fixture at Al Thumama Stadium on Sunday. The Red Devils are heading into the match on the back of a narrow 1-0 win over Canada in their opening match of the tournament on Wednesday, while Morocco played out a goalless draw against last edition’s finalists Croatia on the same day. Belgium, who had reached the semifinals in 2018 have one of the strongest squad’s on paper, and it could be the last opportunity for many of their ‘golden generation’ of players to win a major trophy as they are in the twilight of their careers.

The Red Devils were far from convincing against Canada in their opening match and were lucky to secure three points. The CONCACAF outfit played a swift attacking brand of football and pushed Belgium on to the back-foot for a major part of the game. Meanwhile Belgium goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois was called into action early on as he denied Alphonso Davis from the penalty spot. And then, on the stroke of half-time, the Voyageurs were made to pay for their missed chance as Michy Batshuayi slotted home from Kevin de Bruyne’s assist to break the deadlock. Although Canada came out all guns blazing in the second half, the Belgium defence stood firm to take all three points.

Morocco, on the other hand, matched toe-to-toe with Croatia at Al Bayt Stadium. The Atlas Lions displayed a solid defensive game to earn a point and keep themselves in the mix for last-16 qualification. The Atlas Lions are participating in their third World Cup finals and have never reached knockout stages. In the last edition in Russia, the North African outfit secured just a solitary point after playing out a 2-2 draw against Spain in their third and final group match. This time around, head coach Walid Regragui has already admitted his side are unfancied to reach the Round of 16 stage, given the pedigree of their European counterparts in Group F.

Probable Lineups

Belgium’s talismanic striker Romelu Lukaku is expected to return from injury and might find a place on the bench. Martinez is unlikely to make too many alterations to the playing eleven, while Thomas Meunier is pushing for a place in the starting eleven in place of Yannick Carrasco. Amadou Onana came off the bench and gave a good account of himself against Canada and could replace Youri Tielemans in the engine room. As for Morocco, Fiorentina-man Sofyan Amrabat is expected to be the key man in the midfield, alongside Amallah and Ounahi.

Belgium probable starting lineup: Courtois, Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Dendoncker, Meunier, Onana, Witsel, Carrasco, De Bruyne, E Hazard, Batshuayi

Morocco probable starting lineup: Bounou, Hakimi, Aguerd, Saiss, Mazraoui, Ounahi, Amrabat, Amallah, Ziyech, En-Nesyri, Boufal
