Bayern Munich netted twice against Schalke without reply in their last outing on November 12, courtesy of strikes from Serge Gnabry and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting. It was their 10th successive win across all competitions. The stunning run of form saw Julian Nagelsmann’s side move four points clear at the summit, as well as easing themselves into the knockout stages of the Champions League with six wins from as many games. The Bavarians are set to take on Paris Saint-Germain in the two legged round of 16 tie of the continental competition next month. Meanwhile, Bayern will travel to RB Leipzig next Friday, for their first competitive game in more than two months.
Salzburg, on the other hand, will not return to competitive action until facing Sturm Graz in the Austrian Cup on February 3. Austria always takes an extended winter break due to adverse weather conditions, although it is a prolonged one this season due to the recent World Cup in Qatar. Meanwhile, Matthias Jaissle’s side’s last competitive game was on November 13, when they edged past Austria Klagenfurt courtesy of Benjamin Sesko’s lone goal ten minutes into the second half. Although the Red Bulls failed to reach the knockout stages of the Champions League, they managed to finish third in Group E, setting up a fascinating encounter against Roma in the Europa League last-32 tie.
