Bayern Munich will host Barcelona in one of the most anticipated group stage matches of the Champions League at Allianz Arena on Tuesday night. Both sides are heading into the fixture on the back of comprehensive victories in their opening match of the competition last week. Bayern defeated Inter Milan 2-0 last Wednesday, while Barcelona thrashed Viktoria Plzen 5-1 on the same day. Bayern kicked off their European campaign by putting two goals past Inter Milan without reply. At San Siro last week, Leroy Sane put Bayern ahead inside the opening 25 minutes before Danilo D Ambrosio’s own goal, six minutes after the hour-mark, doubled the German outfit’s lead. Meanwhile Bayern haven’t been victorious in the Bundesliga since August 21, though, drawing each of their last three games against Borussia Monchengladbach, Berlin and Stuttgart. In their recent match against Stuttgart, the Bavarians led twice through Mathys Tel and Jamal Musial’s goals, but a last-gasp penalty from Serhou Guirassy saw the points shared.
Barcelona, on the other hand, have won each of their last five competitive games across all competitions, scoring a whopping 20 goals in that period, while conceding just two. In their last match against Cadiz, Frenkie de Jong, Rober Lewandowski, Ansu Fati and Ousmane Dembele netted for Barca to secure all three points and move to 13 points from 5 games, just two points behind leaders Real Madrid in the La Liga standings. Prior to that, Xavi’s side thrashed Viktoria Plzen in the Group C encounter of Champions League, courtesy of a hat-trick from Lewandowski and one goal each from Franck Kessie and Ferran Torres.
Bayern winger Kingsley Coman and right-back Bouna Sarr are sidelined with injuries. Sadio Mane is expected to lead the line with Leroy Sane, Thomas Muller and Serge Gnabry in support. Joshua Kimmich and Sabitzer could pull the strings in the midfield. As for Barca, Xavi is likely to revert to his best playing eleven after resting many players during the win against Cadiz. Sergio Busquets is expected to be the leader in the midfield with Pedri and Gavi in support. In-form striker Lewandowski is likely to lead the line.
