Barnsley and Sheffield Wednesday will go head-to-head in the League One playoff final at Wembeley Stadium on Monday. Both sides are heading into the match on the back of contrasting semi-final ties, with the Tykes getting the better of Bolton Wanderers 2-1 on aggregate, while Darren Moore’s side pulled off a remarkable comeback to overcome Peterborough United. Meanwhile, Barnsley defeated the Owls 2-0 in the league at Hillborough this season in September last year, before securing a 4-2 win in front of their own supporters in the reverse almost six months later.

Barnsley welcomed Bolton to Oakwell having played out a 1-1 draw in the first leg of the semi-final tie at University of Bolton Stadium. Michael Duff’s side took full advantage of their home-advantage as they took and early lead through Liam Kitching’s 24th-minute effort and went on to hold on to the slender lead and booked a place in the playoff final. The Tykes recorded only 32% of ball possession but managed to attempt 10 shots with four of them on target, compared to just two shots on target for Bolton. Meanwhile, the success over the Trotters ended a four-game winless run for Barnsley.

Sheffield Wednesday, on the other hand, produced one of the most remarkable comebacks in footballing history to get the better of Peterborough. The Owls suffered a humiliating 4-0 thrashing in the first leg and ABAX Stadium and not many would have expected them to overturn the four goal deficit in front of their own supporters. But Moore’s side did the unthinkable at Hillsborough, scoring four goals in 90 minutes of play thanks to Michael Smith, Lee Gregory, Reece James and Liam Palmer, and forced the game into extra time. Gregory’s 105th-minute own goal gave the advantage to the Owls, but the Tykes made the score 5-5 through Callum Peterson’s 112th-minute effort before prevailing 5-3 on penalties. Sheffield Wednesday became the first-ever team to reach an EFL playoff final after losing the first leg of a a semi by at least four goals. Meanwhile, that 4-0 reverse to Peterborough represents the sole defeat from the Owls’ last six matches, with other five all ending in victories.
