Barnsley played out a 1-1 draw away to Bolton in the first leg of their playoff semi-final tie thanks to Dion Charles’ 67th-minute equaliser. And then, in the second leg at at Oakwell, the Tykes produced a very professional performance to secure a 1-0 win, despite recording just 32% of ball possession, thanks to Liam Kitching’s 24th-minute effort. In fact, the success over the Trotters ended a four-game run without victory or clean sheet for Michael Duff’s side. Sheffield Wednesday, on the other hand, looked all but out of the Championship race, having suffered a 4-0 thrashing against Peterborough in the semi-final playoff first leg at ABAX Stadium. However, to the surprise of everyone, the Owls came out all guns blazing in the second leg at Hillsborough, scoring four goals in 90 minutes of play thanks to Michael Smith, Lee Gregory, Reece James and Liam Palmer, and forced the game into extra time. Although Gregory’s 105th-minute own goal gave the advantage to Peterborough, the Owls made the score 5-5 through Callum Peterson’s 112th-minute effort before prevailing 5-3 on penalties. Sheffield Wednesday became the first-ever team to reach an EFL playoff final after losing the first leg of a a semi by at least four goals.
