Barcelona will be aiming to extend their winning streak to ten games across all competitions, when they host Sevilla in a La Liga fixture at Camp Nou on Sunday night. Both sides are heading into the match on the back of league wins, as the hosts beat Real Betis 2-1 in the mid-week, while Sevilla thrashed rock bottom side Elche 3-0, last Saturday. As of now, Barcelona are sitting at the summit of the Spanish top flight standings, having collected 50 points from 19 games, five points ahead of the reigning champions Real Madrid. The visitors, meanwhile, are languishing at the 14th position, with just 21 points to their name, just two clear of the relegation zone.

Barcelona got the better of Real Betis on Wednesday, courtesy of second half strikes from Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski. Although Betis pulled one back through Jules Kounde’s own goal, five minutes from time, the Catalan giants managed to hold on to the slender lead and secured their fourth consecutive top flight victory. It was Blaugrana’s 16th La Liga-win of the season. Apart from their failure to qualify for the knockout stages of the Champions League, Xavi’s side have been excellent for much of the campaign, having already clinched the Spanish Super Cup last month and reached the semi-finals of Copa del Rey, where they will face Real Madrid in the two-legged tie in March. The Catalan club’s next big assignment is against Manchester United in the Europa League knockout round playoff, later this month.
Sevilla, on the other hand, are going through a torrid season, having been in the relegation zone a couple of weeks ago. However, three three wins from their last four outings have helped Jorge Sampaoli’s side to move into the safe zone. Last time out, Los Nervionenses netted three times against Elche without reply, through Yousef En Nesyri’s brace and one goal from Marcus Acuna. It was Sevilla’s fifth top flight victory of the season. As of now, a top-four finish looks unlikely for Sampaoli’s side, but a couple of positive results in the upcoming fixtures will surely help them climb to the top half of the table.
