The 2022-23 Champions League group stage enters the next-to-last round of game , with five teams- Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Manchester City, Napoli and Club Brugge- already qualified for the round of 16. Meanwhile five-time champions Barcelona’s future is not in their own hands. The La Liga giants are currently sitting at the third spot in Group C, having collected four points from as many games, three points adrift of second-placed side Inter Milan. Barca will host Bayern Munich on Wednesday night, and they will already know whether or not the match will have any meaning before the kickoff even takes place.

Prior to the match at Camp Nou, Inter Milan will host Viktoria Plzen in the other Group F fixture at San Siro. The result of the match will either seal Barca’s fate or give them a lifeline before they meet the Bundesliga champions in the late kickoff. If the Serie A side beat Plzen, they are through to the last-16 and Barca will be eliminated from the Champions League. Inter has a superior head-to-head record against Blaugrana, having recorded a 1-0 win at home and then managed to secure a 3-3 draw at Camp Nou, last time out. Therefore, even if Barca were to win the last two games and Inter lose on Matchday 6, both sides would be locked on 10 points and the tie-break would go to the Italians.

If Inter are held to a draw by Plzen and Barca get the better of Bayern, then it would keep the La Liga outfit alive in the Champions League going into the final matchday. If Inter were to draw against the Czech outfit and Bayern and finish with 9 points, then Barca would need two wins to qualify. If Inter were to lose both their games and finish with 7 points, Barca would qualify with a draw against Bayern and a win in Plzen. So these are all the possible scenarios, and we’ll know free minutes before the kickoff at Camp Nou whether Barca vs Bayern will be meaningless or not.
