Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong could leave for Manchester City

The 24-year-old only joined Barcelona in 2019 and since then has made 106 appearances scoring 9 goals, however Barcelona could be forced to sell him because of financial constraints.

Barcelona are ready to let star midfielder Frenkie de Jong leave Camp Nou for GBP 75 million in January, with Manchester City touted as a possible destination, according to reports. The Spanish giants are in the midst of a financial crisis and are desperate to raise money and De Jong could be the first player out the door to raise funds, according to El Chiringuito. A potential swap deal involving Manchester City forward Raheem sterling was rumoured earlier but because of the financial situation it appears the Catalan giants are more inclined to accept a cash offer.

Barcelona are hoping to rebuild the squad under new boss Xavi but are in a poor financial situation so they could be forced to sell some of their players and bring in fresh recruits. De Jong is one of the most highly rated midfielders in the world right now, and a good deal involving the Dutchman could be financially beneficial for the club.

On the other hand, Manchester City are also looking for a midfielder that can straight away fit into Pep Guardiola’s possession based system. De Jong looks like the perfect player for Guardiola as he is exceptionally good with the ball at his feet, has a very good range of passing and vision and controls the midfield with ease.

Meanwhile the 24-year-old only joined Barcelona in 2019 and since then has made 106 appearances scoring 9 goals. He was brought into Camp Nou with hopes to build the club’s future around him. However, things haven’t been going in the right direction for Barcelona and de Jong. Although de Jong has been performing well, the team lacks quality to challenge for the title.

De Jong is an extraordinary player: Xavi

Barcelona are currently placed ninth in La Liga with just 17 points from 12 games. Ronald Koeman was sacked as head coach after the team’s 1-1 draw against Alaves on October 31 and former Barca legend Xavi has been appointed as the new boss. Meanwhile the 41-year-old manager has already made it clear that he is a big fan of De Jong, therefore it needs to be seen whether Barcelona would make an attempt to keep the Dutchman.

Xavi said “He is an extraordinary player, he is not afraid to receive the ball in difficult areas, to turn around. He needs time to adapt, it is another culture. It is a big club. Frenkie de Jong is Frenkie de Jong. It has nothing to do with it, neither with me, nor with Iniesta nor with Busquets”

The World Cup winner added “He is a very capable footballer, he is going to be the organizer of this generation from the Netherlands. He is very capable of doing it. He has a very good generation and he is going to achieve great things.”
