Barcelona defender Sergiño Dest on Sunday became the first-ever footballer from the United States to score a brace in the La Liga, following his fine performance against Real Sociedad. Dest’s goals helped the prominent Spanish club equal a historic record from 2009. Barcelona’s 1-6 win against Sociedad saw Ronald Koeman’s side register their ninth consecutive victory away from home.

This matches Pep Guardiola’s record as coach in 2009. Guardiola further registered the second-best record in the history of the club which is 10 consecutive away wins, between the period of August 2012 and January 2013.

The current Barcelona team will enjoy an opportunity to match the milestone in the upcoming Clásico against Real Madrid on April 10. They can further reach the club record of 12 away wins in a row, with triumphs against Villarreal and Valencia, which will certainly be a source of happiness for fans who have witnessed the club crash out of the UEFA Champions League recently.

Barcelona were thrashed 4-1 in the first leg of the Round of 16 by French club Paris Saint-Germain F.C. They failed to overhaul the deficit in the second leg, having registered a 1-1 draw.

Dest is further just the third player from the US to score in La Liga, after Jozy Altidore in 2008 and Yunus Musah in 2020. The right back has now scored three goals in his 32 games so far this season. 22 of those games were in La Liga, 2 in the Copa del Rey, 7 in the Champions League and one in the Spanish Super Cup. He has also provided an assist since making his debut last October in the 1-1 draw against Sevilla at Camp Nou.

Dest scored his first-ever goal for FC Barcelona in the group stages of the UEFA Champions League, featuring a match against Dynamo Kyiv in November last year.

The Spanish giants are currently placed on the second spot on the La Liga league standings, with 62 points. They trail leaders Atletico Madrid by four points. Arch-rivals Real Madrid occupy the third spot on the table, having accumulated 60 points so far. The La Liga could well be headed for an exciting finish.
