Australia will host New Zealand in an international friendly at Suncorp Stadium on Thursday. Both sides were last in action in June in the world cup qualifiers, with the hosts getting the better of Peru in the final playoff match to earn a ticket to Qatar, while New Zealand fell at the last hurdle, losing to Costa Rica. Australia would be looking to build further momentum ahead of the World Cup in November. The All Whites, meanwhile, have no competitive action looming, therefore Danny hay’s side would be hoping to get one over their rival in Brisbane.

The Socceroos cruised through their second round of the World Cup qualification. That saw Graham Arnold’s side advance to another group, consisting of tougher opponents like Japan and Saudi Arabia. Although Australia fell short of a top-two finish and automatic progression to the upcoming tournament, the Socceroos managed to overcome United Arab Emirates fourth round qualification to book a place in the inter-continental playoff. The final hurdle against South American outfit Peru proved to be a tough test as the match remained goalless throughout and the winner was decided via the penalty shootout. Australia would prevail 5-4 to advance to their fifth consecutive World Cup appearance.

New Zealand, on the other hand, also reached the inter-confederation playoff before falling just short. The All Whites unsurprisingly cruised through the Oceania qualification, thrashing Solomon Islands 5-0 in the regional final courtesy of a brace from Bill Tulimoa and one goal each from Chris Wood, Joe Bell and Matthew Garbett. Costa Rica stood in their way in June and Joe Campbell’s lone goal was enough to separate the two sides at Al Rayyan stadium. New Zealand’s wait for a World Cup place after bowing out in the group stage in 2010 continues.
