Atletico Madrid are just a win away from securing a majestic triumph in the ongoing edition of La Liga. The Madrid-based side needs to record a victory in their last league encounter against Real Valladolid CF, to lift the trophy for the first time since 2014. Atletico’s surge has been spearheaded by a brilliant performance from Uruguay striker Luis Suarez. Suarez was written off by many having struggled in his last season at FC Barcelona. However, the 34-year-old has been a star performer in this edition, smashing 20 league goals. He stands fourth in the list of top goal-scorers in the La Liga this season.

Popular football commentator and critic Suman Chakraborty has hailed the performances of the Madrid-based side, terming their triumph as a “telling statement” for one and all.

“Atletico Madrid winning the La Liga would incredible, to say the least. Their victory would be a telling statement to those who term money as the most important factor for success in the world of football. Money does motivate, but it is not the only way to survive. Real Madrid and Barcelona used to dominate the La Liga at one stage due to the brilliance of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. The pendulum seems to be shifting in favour of Atletico who have indicated that hard work, determination, tenacity and fierce self-belief can go on to make a vital difference,” he says in an exclusive interaction with Sportslumo.

“Simeone will lead Atletico on to success”

Diego Simeone’s Atletico have not enjoyed a lot of success when it comes to silverware or trophies, having crumbled when it mattered the most. Two of the most prominent examples are their defeats in consecutive UEFA Champions League finals against Real Madrid.

However, Chakraborty has backed Simeone to make amends for those defeats in the upcoming league encounter, citing the example of Jurgen Klopp as a manager who went about churning a glorious turnaround.

“Diego Simeone will certainly be wiser after some heartbreaks in the past. I would back him to lead his players on to a triumph, considering how sharp he is as a manager. Jurgen Klopp went on to win the Premier League as well as the Champions League with Liverpool, having been defeated in a final of the latter in the past against Real Madrid. If Klopp can do it, Simeone is more than capable of achieving similar success,” he concluded.
