Athletic Bilbao will host Almeria in a La Liga fixture at the San Mames Barria stadium on Friday night. The hosts are heading into the match on the back of a 3-2 win over Rayo Vallecano, before the international break, while Almeria suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat against Mallorca. The victory helped Athletic to move to fourth position, having collected 13 points from six games, while the visitors are languishing at the 16th position, with just four points thus far.

Athletic got the better of Rayo Vallecano courtesy of goals from Inaki Williams, Orihan Sancet and Nico Williams. It was Ernesto Valbverde’s side’s fourth La Liga win of the campaign. The Los Leones have managed to keep three clean sheets and scored 12 goals in the league thus far. Athletic are expected to take all three points against the newly-promoted Almeria, which would take them level with Barcelona in second spot, and only two points behind reigning champions Real Madrid at the top. 

Almeria, on the other hand, have won just one of their six league games, while four matches ended in defeats. Rojiblancos’ lone La Liga win of the season came against Sevilla (2-1) on August 28, courtesy of goals from Largie Ramzani and Umar Sadiq. Meanwhile, in their last outing against Mallorca, Pablo Maffeo’s lone goal in the 25th-minute separated the two sides at Iberostar Stadium on September 18.  A fourth successive defeat could potentially see Almeria drop into the relegation zone by the end of the weekend.

Probable Lineups

Athletic boss Valverde has several injuries to deal with, with the likes of Daniel Vivian, Julen Agirrezabala, Mikel Vesga, Yuri Berchiche and Mikel Balenziaga all occupying the medical room. Inaki Williams is likely to lead the line with Nico Williams, Muniain and Berenguer in support. As for Almeria, Ramazani and Toure could partner up front with Robertone and Costa pulling the strings in the midfield.
