The victory helped Pep Guardiola’s side to maintain the second position in the standings with 13 points from 5 games, just two points adrift of the league leaders Arsenal. Aston Villa, meanwhile, are languishing at the 19th spot in the table with just three points, only above Leicester City.

Villa’s only league victory this season came against Everton (2-1) on August 13, courtesy of goals from Danny Ings and Emi Buendia. Meanwhile the other four games ended in defeats. In their recent outing against the Gunners, Douglas Luiz canceled out Gabriel Jesus’ opener before Gabriel Martinelli netted the winner to hand a third consecutive league defeat to Villa. Although there is still a lot of football to be played in the coming months, Steven Gerrard would be desperate to get his team on track.

Man City, on the other hand, have managed to pick up four wins so far and dropped points only against Newcastle United in a thrilling 3-3 draw on August 21.
