Ashique Kuruniyan news: Bengaluru FC winger agrees to join ATK Mohun Bagan on a swap deal involving Prabir Das, as per reports

Ashique is likely to sign a contract with the Kolkata outfit until 2016, while Prabir will also be handed a multi-year deal by the Blues.

Bengaluru FC player Ashique Kuruniyan has reportedly agreed to join ATK Mohun Bagan on a swap deal involving Prabir Das. ATKMB are currently busy in the AFC Cup 2022, having registered one loss and a victory from their opening two group matches while Bengaluru FC finished in the sixth position in the last Indian Super League (ISL) season. Both Ashique and Prabir have their current contract with their respective clubs extending till May 2023. With the 2022-23 ISL season only a few months away, clubs have already been busy in the transfer market, trying to make the right acquisition to bolster their squad and improve their performance from the previous season. 

According to a recent report by Football Monk, ATK Mohun Bagan and Bengaluru FC have agreed to a swap deal. Ashique will join the three-time ISL champions while Prabir will move to BFC from ATKMB. Ashique is likely to sign a contract with the Kolkata outfit until 2016. On the other hand, Prabir will also be handed a multi-year deal by the Blues. The deal looks beneficial for both sides as ATKMB needs a quality left-wing-back while BFC is in need of a proven right-back.

Ashique is a versatile footballer

Ashique started his career as an attacking player who prefers to play on the left wing. The 24-year-old came through the ranks of Pune FC academy and later joined Spanish club Villarreal “C” on a loan deal in 2016. Although his short European stint didn’t go well because of injuries, the Kerala-born winger came back to India as a professional footballer who quickly rose to limelight. He made his ISL debut for Pune City FC in 2017 and after two years, joined Bengaluru FC in a deal worth Rs. 16.6 million. It was at BFC that he evolved as one of the best in the country. Initially, he played as a left winger but soon was deployed as a left-wing-back because of the needs of the team and Ashique was quick to adapt to his new role. He is versatile enough to play anywhere in the attacking department and can also be deployed at left-midfield position.

Ashique played a crucial role in BFC’s 2018-19 ISL triumph

He has all the attributes to excel at the top level. The left-footed player is a confident lad who is not afraid to take up any kind challenge. He is very quick, has great physical strength and always gives his 100 percent for the team. In 2018-19, Ashique played a crucial role in BFC’s ISL triumph, as he finished the campaign with two goals and three assists in 17 appearances. He registered 44 crosses, 19 shots, 36 tackles and 23 interceptions, was influential in both halves of the field.

Prabir is an experienced wing-back

As for Prabir, the 28-year-old is a proven wing-back who has made 86 ISL appearances. The Kolkata-born footballer is also an attack minded wing-back who works his socks off down the right flank. Apart from handling the defensive duties, Prabir is very effective when it comes to building attacks. He is very quick and is capable of taking on the defenders and delivering quality crosses into the box. Parbir’s best season was in 2019-20 when he provided five assists in 20 appearances for ATK in the title winning campaign.
