Antonio Conte is willing to discuss taking over at Manchester United as per reports if Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is sacked, while several players have reportedly expressed doubts about the Norwegian’s ability to lead the club forward. Several dressing-room sources have reportedly said to English newspaper The Guardian that United’s 5-0 defeat to Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday has cemented a lack of faith in Solskjaer as a good enough manager. The 48-year-old is regarded as tactically unimpressive by fans, despite being well-liked by the squad and the club as a whole.

After taking just one point from their last four Premier League games, United are thought to be seriously considering Solskjaer’s future. Joel Glazer, the American family’s owner, lives in Florida, which is five hours behind the UK, so any decision could be made later on Monday. Richard Arnold, the managing director, is said to have cancelled all appointments on Monday in order to meet with Glazer. The club has not made any formal contact with Conte. Although the Italian is hesitant to accept a position during the season, he would make an exception for United because the club represents a unique opportunity. Before committing, the 52-year-old would like to understand United’s vision.

Conte has been out of work since leaving Internazionale in May, where he finished his two seasons with the Serie A title, his fourth in Italy. Conte also won the Premier League in his first season at Chelsea in 2016-17, as well as the FA Cup the following year.

‘DARKEST DAY’ AS UNITED BOSS

Solskjaer said after the Liverpool game that United had hit “rock bottom” on what he described as his “darkest day” with the team but insisted he would not quit. “I do believe in myself, I do believe that I am getting close to what I want with the club,” he said.

When asked if it was on Solskjaer, defender Luke Shaw admitted such a result was on the cards. “I think it’s ourselves that we need to look at, first and foremost, in the mirror,” he told the Malaysian sports network Stadium Astro.

“Are we doing everything right and preparing right for the games in ourselves? Of course, we have the tactics and how the manager wants us to play, but I think at times we’re way too easy to play against. I think, for example, you look at the first goal, it can’t be possible that they can have sort of three running through in the first five minutes. We need to be more compact, we need to be better and we know that. I think also maybe we can say this result was coming. I think in past games where we’ve won, we haven’t been at our best and we know that,” he added.
