With plenty of players being ruled out with injuries, Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag was forced to name a completely changed line-up from back to front against Arsenal. United had already missed several key players through injuries and on top of it, Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes were also not available for the all-important Premier League fixture. Amad Diallo was one such player who benefited from this situation and got a rare start on the right wing.

The Ivory Coast winger was a bright spark for the club on the right side, as he kept pushing for an opening which never came. He was one of the positives for Manchester United, as they lost 1-0 to Arsenal in the Premier League contest. Leandro Trossard’s goal in the first half was enough to secure the win for the visitors. Notably, Amad Diallo was replaced by Antony midway through the second half owing to an injury.

Amad Diallo’s injury update

After the match, Erik ten Hag provided a fitness update on the promising young winger. Asked if there is an update on the injury, ten Hag told MUTV, “Not yet. Obviously it’s a knock. And of course, it’s also… he didn’t start at all. So it’s his first start. He did well. He was very bright, very confident. I thought also there was a reason that, in the end, he was out of fitness and came off. We have to see tomorrow what it is.”

He added: “I think Amad deserved it [his start] and there is a still a lot of competition in that position. So he was injured for a long time and he has built himself back. He deserved it and across the season with [Alejandro] Garnacho, with Antony, we have options and [Marcus] Rashford has also played there as well. But today I thought he deserved it and he played very good, he did what we expected him to do, he was brave, he was creative, defended very good and I was impressed with his performance.”

Injuries have played a big role in United’s poor run this season, with the club constantly missing plenty of players through different injuries. “I don’t know where we should be when we had all the players on board, but definitely it is if there are players all on board, then you will get more points. Definitely you will [have] more consistency, especially in the backline because yeah, now we concede a lot of chances, a lot of goals and last year we had the most clean sheets in the Premier League,” ten Hag later told MUTV, Sky Sports and others after the match.

He added: “Any manager can always do anything better, but now after two years here, I have only had one time where I have had a full group of players. You can’t progress a team when in particular in certain key areas, it is like swimming with your hands behind your back, then you have to keep your head up and above the water level, this is what we are trying to do. Still we are in a cup final, this is good but if you want to progress a team we need fit players. You have seen with our opponent today that only one player for [Arsenal] was not available. We had so many.”
