Barcelona will be aiming to put aside their Europa League exit and get back to winning ways when they travel to Estadio Mediterraneo for a La Liga fixture against Almeria on Sunday. The catalan outfit suffered a 2-1 defeat at Old Trafford in the second leg of their Europa League playoff tie on Tuesday and thereby lost 4-3 on aggregate. The hosts, meanwhile, are heading into the match on the back of a 6-2 defeat away to Girona in the league last Friday. As of now, Blaugrana are occupying top spot in the Spanish top flight standings, having collected 59 points from 22 games, eight clear of the chasing pack. Almeria, meanwhile, are sitting just above the relegation zone, at the 17th position, with just 22 points to their name, level with 18th-placed Cadiz.

Almeria have lost each of their last three outings this month, and need to secure a couple of positive results in the upcoming fixtures to move away from the drop zone. Rojiblancos, who returned to the La Liga for the 2022-23 campaign by winning last season’s Segunda Division, had a decent season up until the end of January, as they were sitting near the mid-table. But a three-consecutive defeat in February pushed them down to the bottom half. Last time out, Rubi’s side lost to Girona, despite the fact that Largie Ramazani and El Bilal Toure found the back of the net at Montilivi. Meanwhile, Almeria’s home form has been pretty decent this season, having taken 19 points from 11 matches in front of their home fans. After the game against Barca, Rojiblancos will also host Villarreal next weekend, before traveling to Seville.

Barcelona, on the other hand, are left with only the domestic competition to focus on after being eliminated from the Europa League on Thursday. Blaugrana will take on Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey semi-final on March 1 and are in excellent position in the La Liga, eight points clear of the reigning champions Real Madrid, at the second place. Last Sunday, Xavi’s side defeated Cadiz in the league, thanks to first half efforts from Sergi Roberto and Robert Lewabndowski. It was their 19th league-win of the season. But, four days later, the Catalan outfit lost to Manchester United at Old Trafford in the Europa League, despite taking the lead through Lewandowski’s penalty kick inside the opening 18 minutes. It was their first defeat in 18 games across all competitions.
