Ajax will host Shakhtar Donetsk in a pre-season friendly at Amsterdam Arena on Tuesday. The hosts are heading into the match on the back of a 3-2 win over RB Salzburg last Tuesday, while Shakhtar played out a thrilling 3-3 draw against Fortuna Sittard in their recent outing. Ajax had a brilliant season last term, winning the Eredivisie title with 83 points from 34 games, 2 points more than second-placed PSV. The visitors, meanwhile, saw their league campaign come to a half earlier this year due to the war between Ukraine and Russia. Shakhtar sat atop the Ukrainian Premier League at the time of the break with 47 points from 18 games.

Ajax have won three of their five friendlies so far, starting with a 3-0 win over SV Meppen, lost 5-2 to Pederborn, thrashed NK Lokomotiva 3-0, played out a 1-1 draw against Eupen and then got the better of Salzburn in a five-gal encounter. Last Tuesday, at Saalfelden Arena, Dusan Tadic, Mohammed Kudus and Kenneth Taylor got on the score-sheet for the Dutch outfit. After the game against Shakhtar, the sons of the Gods will take on PSV in the final of the Johan Cruijff shield on July 30 before beginning their league title-defence away to fortuna Sittard on August 6.

Shakhtar, on the other hand, have seen several of their players depart the club since the start of the war. The club is unsure about its future and so far there hasn’t been any official announcement about the start of the 2022-23 Ukrainian Football League. The Miners are trying to keep the squad fit by playing friendlies. Last Friday at Sportpark ‘t Nieuwelant, Danylo Sikan, Taras Stepnenko and Oleg Ocheretko netted for Shakhtar to secure a draw.
