A Milan derby is set to take place at King Fahd International Stadium in Riyadh, as Serie A champions AC Milan take on Coppa Italia winners Inter Milan in the Supercoppa Italiana. The two heavyweights of Italian football are set to take a break from Serie A duty to face each other in the 234th Derby della Madonnina. Milan are heading into the match on the back of a 2-2 league-draw against Lecce last Saturday, while Inter edged past Verona 1-0, a day later, to make it four wins from their last five Italian top flight matches. As of now, Milan are occupying second spot in the Italian top tier standings, having collected 38 points from 18 games, while Simone Inzahi’s side are sitting two places behind the Rossoneri, with one point less.

Milan are going through a bit of a rough patch, having not tasted victory in their last three outings. Last time out, Stefano Pioli’s side came from behind to earn a point away to Lecce. A 3rd-minute own goal from Theo Hernandez put Lecce ahead before Federico Baschirotto doubled the score, twenty minutes later. Meanwhile, the Rossoneri came out all guns blazing in the second half and leveled the score courtesy of strikes from Rafael Leao and Davide Calabria. Prior to that, the reigning Serie A champions suffered a surprise 1-0 loss to Torino and exited the Coppa Italia. 

Inter Milan, on the other hand, are in stunning form, having won three of their last four games across all competitions. Last time out, Inzaghi’s side secured a narrow win over Verona through Lautaro Martinez’ lone goal inside the opening three minutes. It was Nerazzurri’s 12th league-win of the campaign, and eighth one in their last 10 top flight outings. Last week, Inter managed to squeeze through Parma (2-1) and enter the quarter-finals of Coppa Italia. Martinez, who struggled to find the back of the net in Argentina’s successful World Cup campaign, has resumed duties for Inter in stunning fashion, having scored three goals in his last three matches. Once again, the 25-year-old will be Inter’s trump card in the Milan derby.

Probable Lineups

AC Milan midfielder Sandro Tonali, who missed the last match because of suspension, is set to return to the playing eleven of Wednesday’s Milan derby. Meanwhile, the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Rade Krunic, Ante Rebic and Mike Maignan are sidelined with injuries. Veteran Olivier Giroud will lead the line, with Leao, Brahim Diaz and Saelemaekers in support. As for Inter, 36-year-old Edin Dzeko will spearhead the attack, alongside Martinez. The Bosnia & Herzegovina footballer is set to become the oldest player to find the back of the net in Supercoppa history, overtaking Cristiano Ronaldo, who scored for Juventus against Napoli at the age of 35 years and 350 days in 2021. Meanwhile, striker Romelu Lukaku is still not 100% fit.
