Indian Women's Hockey Team, under the leadership of Savita Punia, will be determined to put their best performance at Commonwealth Games 2022.
After an underwhelming performance at the World Cup 2022, India will try to put their best show at the Commonwealth Games 2022. The team led by Goal-keeper Savita Punia, in the absence of Rani Rampal who was excluded due to injury, will start its campaign on the first day of Birmingham Games 2022. With a stunning fourth-place finish at the Tokyo Olympics 2020, India was expected to finish at the top of the podium at the World Cup 2022 held in Spain and Netherlands. However, India couldn’t get past China and England in the group stage and ended up getting defeated by co-hosts Spain in the cross-over match by 1-0, resulting in an end to their World Cup dreams.
However, coached by Jaanneke Schopman, the team will be looking to bounce back stronger and aim to clinch a medal in the quadrennial event. The team is placed in Group A, alongside England, Canada, Wales, and Ghana, and will play against Ghana in their inaugural match. In the Gold Coast 2018, India bettered their performance with a fourth-place finish in comparison to their previous editions’ performance in Glasgow and New Delhi where they had to settle for the fifth position. India’s best performance came in Commonwealth Games 2002 at Manchester, England when they clinched the Gold medal, defeating England in the final and the formidable Australian team in the Semi-final.
