Teams will use the new Pirelli compound for a vital F1 2023 tyre test. A new hard compound that falls between the current C1 and C2 will also undergo its first proper test during this session. Each of the ten teams has two vehicles, one for racers and the other for inexperienced drivers with fewer than two starts. The young drivers, some of whom advance to race seats themselves next season, will be expected to play a significant role because only the 2023 tyres will be utilised. The teams participated in the FP2 2023 tyre testing in Austin and Mexico City. While some drivers used the same tyres that will be used in Abu Dhabi, others used experimental versions that didn’t make the cut during those “blind”0 sessions. The tyres will be prepared for Abu Dhabi as agreed upon with the teams and the FIA for 2023, including a two-hour pre-heating period at 70 degrees Celsius.

The race drivers are given different amounts of tyres than the rookies, with the former receiving more sets and possibly logging more miles throughout the day. These are the allocations:

Race Drivers: 10 sets of one each of C1, C2, C3, C4, and C5.

8 sets for rookie drivers: 2 C3, 4 C4, and 2 C5.

When asked about the selections by Motorsport.com, Pirelli chief engineer Simone Berra responded, “The allocation was decided together with the FIA.” “As a result, we will only bring a single set of the hardest range, C1 and C2, as well as a few sets of C3, C4, and C5, which are plainly more suited for this circuit. The young drivers should focus more on the softer range and just maintain their confidence behind the wheel.

New specification for 2024 ?

Prior to the 2023 vehicles being prepared, Pirelli will also conduct some testing with 2022 vehicles in the winter. At Paul Ricard and Fiorano, wet running will be the main focus, and Portimao will get sleek work done in 2024. Mercedes has indicated interest in assisting, and so far, Ferrari, Aston Martin, and AlphaTauri have confirmed their participation. There will be some tests, but not with every team, Berra said. “We inquired about their availability, and some of them responded. “We’ll focus mostly on the intermediate and wets since, in our opinion, it’s the greatest time for testing under chilly, realistic conditions. And after that, we’ll run a few tests to see how well the new 2024 specification works.
