On Monday, Aston Martin announced that Stoffel Vandoorne will join the team as a test and reserve driver for 2023, taking over for Nico Hulkenberg, who is currently driving for Haas. If Vandoorne joins the team, it would suggest that Hulkenberg is on his way out, amid strong rumours that he wants to take Mick Schumacher’s seat at Haas next season. “So far, I can’t say anything specific,” said Hulkenberg when asked about the rumours as per Formula1news.co.uk. “In the end, I don’t make the decision. Negotiations are ongoing and I am relatively optimistic about the progress. You need to be patient with these decisions.”

Tough spot for Mick

The rivalry between Schumacher and Nico has been hotly debated in recent weeks, with Schumacher only getting better at the age of 23, and Hulkenberg arguably closer to retirement than being in his prime at 35. Both Guenther Steiner and Gene Haas have reportedly criticised Schumacher’s performance this season, with the latter claiming that the cost of his mistakes, combined with his lack of point scoring, make him too expensive for the American team to realistically own.

Before the US Grand Prix, the team owner stated that the German would need to score some points in the final four races to keep his seat, and with two races remaining, Schumacher has yet to score. However, the 23-year-weekend old’s has not been without incident, with damage costing him points in Austin and a corner cutting infringement costing him a Q1 escape in Mexico.

Audi rumours?

While Schumacher appears to need to do something extraordinary in Brazil and Abu Dhabi to save his 2024 seat, he may find solace in the fact that Audi has expressed interest in adding him to their ranks for 2026, admitting that the allure of a German driver may be too much to resist.

Mick Schumacher, who is vying to keep his job with Haas, has responded to rumours that he might one day fill an Audi F1 seat. With only three Grands Prix left in the season, the German has not received many guarantees from team owner Guenther Steiner. Schumacher made his Formula One debut with Haas last year, and he had a difficult year because his team was the slowest on the grid. Performance has improved in 2022, but the 23-year-old has found it difficult to keep up with Kevin Magnussen, his more seasoned teammate.

Schumacher was questioned about joining Audi in 2026 to which he replied, “I think it’s great that Audi is getting into Formula 1. It is a global company but a German brand. I hope this will bring many Germans back to Formula 1 and that we will have a home race again at some point. Of course it’s nice to hear that such a large group is looking for a German driver, but all of that is still a long way away.”Â
