Schumacher’s signing by Mercedes as its new backup driver for the 2023 season was announced last week. This marks the return of the legendary family name to the team 11 years after his father Michael made his final F1 start. After parting ways with Ferrari after four years and losing his F1 position with Haas last month after two seasons with the team, it represents the next stage in Schumacher’s career. With family links that go back many years, Schumacher stated that joining Mercedes “means a lot.” Prior to making his F1 debut in 1991, his father raced sports cars for the German company, and his uncle Ralf also competed for Mercedes in DTM.

Comeback

Following its acquisition of the championship-winning Brawn GP organisation at the conclusion of 2009, Mercedes revealed last week that it has hired Schumacher as its new driver. Schumacher Sr. will race for Mercedes in the 2010 F1 season. Over the course of his three seasons with Mercedes, Schumacher finished on the podium just once, but he laid the groundwork for the eight consecutive constructors’ titles that would come after in 2014.

The changes that are visible since 2014,” stated Schumacher, referring to his most recent visit, which was a clandestine one during which he participated in his first simulator session. “It’s amazing to see how much the team has grown. It demonstrates the reasons behind the team’s current performance level. I’m thrilled to be a part of it and am looking forward to learning more about it and everyone in it.”
