Sainz wants the "consistent Carlos of 2021" to return to Formula One next year

After regretting a number of retirements throughout his 2022 season, Carlos Sainz is eager to revert to the "consistent Carlos of 2021" in Formula 1 the following year.

Sainz’s most successful F1 season to date saw him win a race with Ferrari this year, capturing the British Grand Prix victory and earning pole positions in Belgium and the USA. Sainz’s efforts were hampered by six retirements, including ones in Austin after being struck at the first curve and in Austria, where he appeared destined for second place. Sainz also finished the year 62 points behind Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc. Sainz acknowledged that his 2022 season had “many nice things” that he would “always remember,” but he was keen to try and even out some of the “extremely hard moments” and have a more steady season the following year.

Be Consistent

Sainz won this year’s F1 race with Ferrari to become a race winner. The next step, according to Sainz, was to maintain this throughout a season and ensure there were consistent results throughout the year, something he believed he accomplished in 2021. Sainz said that now that he knows what it takes to win a race in Formula One and fight at the very front, the next step was to do this. I want to be consistent, he declared. “I already know what it takes to win races, but it takes consistency to compete for the world championship. “Although it’s true that Verstappen and Red Bull have been more competitive, the worst finish if you’re in the lead is fifth or sixth. However, with the six or seven retirements we’ve had, a number of points will disappear that would prevent you from winning the world championship. I think you can compete for the world title if you apply those two principles and return to being the steady Carlos of 2021, who I think will finish every race.

Fighting for the title

Sainz finished the year in fifth place overall, but after learning a lot from his 2022 campaign, he said the prospect of competing for the championship felt “close and far at the same time.” Near, he added, “but there is a high level in F1, both in terms of teams and drivers. I am in one of the top teams in the world. “I will continue to put forth the effort and desire, but in order to own one of the best cars and benefit from it, certain conditions must first occur. I had a truly competitive car for the first time this year, and that helped me learn a lot. I’m certain I’ll use this as motivation to get better in the future.
