With Prema Racing, he won the Formula Renault Eurocup in 2019, the FIA Formula 3 Championship in 2020, and the Driver’s Formula 2 Championship in 2021. Piastri began karting in 2011 and went pro in 2014, competing in a variety of Australian races and competitions. Piastri joined Ricky Flynn Motorsport in 2015 and began participating in European and foreign CIK-FIA sanctioned karting competitions, finishing sixth in the 2016 World Championship in Bahrain.

Piastri in the Formula series

In 2016, Piastri made his single-seater debut with Dragon F4 in selected rounds of the Formula 4 UAE Championship, collecting two podiums and finishing sixth overall. Piastri was nominated to the TRS Arden Junior Team line-up for the British F4 championship in 2017. He finished second to Jamie Caroline after claiming six wins and six pole positions. Piastri and Trident participated in the post-season test at Yas Marina in December 2018.

Piastri took part in a post-season test with Prema Racing, the defending FIA Formula 3 team champions, in October 2019. Piastri was signed by the Italian club in January 2020, alongside Logan Sargeant and Frederik Vesti, to compete in the upcoming season. The Australian finished third in three successive races at the Hungaroring and the first Silverstone feature race before retiring for the first time in the season at the next Silverstone sprint race due to a stuck-open DRS. Theo Pourchaire, his last remaining title contender, was unable to close the points difference, and Piastri finished seventh to win the championship by three points over Pourchaire and four over Sargeant.

Piastri stated in December 2020 that he would continue with Prema in Formula 2 for the 2021 season, replacing Mick Schumacher and partnering Ferrari Driver Academy member Robert Shwartzman. In his first race, the Australian finished fifth. He started sixth in the second race and gained positions before passing fellow Alpine junior Guanyu Zhou on the final lap to grab the lead and win his first Formula 2 race. With a podium finish in race one at Yas Marina, the Australian claimed the title, becoming the third driver to win the championship in their first season. Piastri finished his season with a win in the feature race, his fourth in a row, giving him a total of six wins, the most of any driver that season.

Piastri was rewarded for his efforts by the Renault F1 Team with a young drivers test in Bahrain on October 31, 2020, alongside fellow Renault Sport Academy drivers Christian Lundgaard and Guanyu Zhou, after winning the FIA Formula 3 Championship in 2020. Piastri will be a member of the redesigned Alpine Academy in 2021, alongside Zhou, Lundgaard, Victor Martins, and Caio Collet. In the 2022 Formula One Championship, Piastri is the Alpine F1 Team’s reserve driver.
