One name synonymous with the world of Formula One is undoubtedly Schumacher. A name that signifies dominance, class, talent, dedication and glory. All of which are qualities of perhaps the greatest Formula One driver in the history of the sport, Michael Schumacher. Being a legend has a lot of perks, but it’s not without its disadvantages. Anyone else with the same name will have a truckload of expectations on their shoulders, especially if they go into the same profession. Some live up to the expectations, most do not. Such is the cruel world of sport, and especially Formula One, that an athlete is judged not by their skills, but by that of their parents and how they compare to that. However, if Mick Schumacher’s performances in F3 and F2 are anything to go by, the Schumacher legacy is not dead just yet.

Mick Schumacher before F1

Born to the great Michael Schumacher and Corinna Schumacher (who was also a racer), Mick picked up a knack for what his parents loved from a very young age. He has an older sibling in Gina-Marie Schumacher as well. Michael received life-threatening brain injuries while skiing with his son on December 29, 2013. Mick first spoke publicly about his father in March 2017, identifying him as an icon and a role model.

Schumacher began his racing career in 2008. He began his career as ‘Mick Betsch,’ adopting his mother’s maiden name. In 2014, Schumacher competed under the moniker “Mick Junior” in international and national junior championships, finishing second in the German Junior Kart Championship as well as the European and World Championships. Despite the fact that he did not race in karting under his real surname, his achievements in the sport were covered by the international press.

He performed test drives in a Formula 4 racing car for Jenzer Motorsport towards the end of 2014. He also competed in the Italian F4 Championship, finishing second to Joey Mawson and Marcos Siebert in both titles. In November 2016, Schumacher made his Formula 3 debut by competing in the MRF Challenge, an Indian competition. Schumacher made his Formula 3 European Championship debut with Prema Powerteam in April 2017. He won the Formula 3 championship the following year and was promoted to Formula 2.

In 2019, Schumacher and Sean Gelael joined Prema Racing in the FIA Formula 2 Championship. He finished the season in 12th place in the championship, 53 points ahead of teammate Gelael, with one win and one fastest lap. In the 2020 FIA Formula 2 Championship, Schumacher continued with Prema, joined by reigning FIA Formula 3 champion and fellow Ferrari Driver Academy member Robert Shwartzman. Mick Schumacher shocked the world in only his second year of Formula 2, winning the world championship in 2020.

F1 debut and teams

On January 19, 2019, Schumacher was named a driver for the Ferrari Driver Academy. Schumacher followed in his father’s footsteps, citing Ferrari’s particular place in his heart and his family’s special ties to the team from boyhood as important factors in his decision to join the organization’s academy. On the first day of in-season testing at Bahrain International Circuit on April 2, 2019, Mick Schumacher made his debut behind the wheel of a modern Formula One car, piloting Scuderia Ferrari’s SF90 as the solitary debutant in the field.

After signing a multi-year contract, Schumacher joined the Haas team in 2021, partnering Nikita Mazepin, with whom he had previously raced in go-karts. He chose the number 47 because his other two favourites, 4 and 7, were already taken. For his first race, the Bahrain Grand Prix, the German qualified nineteenth, ahead of teammate Mazepin. Schumacher spun on the opening lap but recovered to finish 16th among the remaining drivers. He finished his rookie season in 19th place in the drivers’ standings, ahead of teammate Mazepin but with 0 points.

For the 2022 season, Schumacher partnered Kevin Magnussen with Haas, and  was a reserve for Ferrari alongside Antonio Giovinazzi. Due to the retirements of both Red Bull vehicles and Pierre Gasly, he qualified 12th and finished 11th in the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix, moving up three spots.
