David Marshall Coulthard is a British former racing driver from Between 1994 and 2008, he competed in 15 Formula One seasons, winning 13 races and finishing on the podium 62 times. Driving for McLaren, he finished second in the 2001 championship. After retiring from Formula One, Coulthard worked as a consultant for Red Bull and then became a commentator and analyst for the BBC’s Formula One coverage. In 2010, he returned to competitive motorsports, joining Mucke Motorsport in the DTM (Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters), and retiring at the end of 2012. Coulthard has also competed in the Race of Champions, coming in second place in the Drivers’ Cup in 2008 and winning it in 2014 and 2018.

Coulthard began karting when he was eleven years old, when his father gave him his first kart. Following victories in local karting championships such as the Scottish Junior Kart Championship and the Scottish Kart Championship, Coulthard competed in races across the United Kingdom, winning the Cumbria Kart Racing Club Championship in 1985. Coulthard competed in the British Formula 3 series for Paul Stewart Racing in 1991, winning five races and finishing second in the championship.

In 1992, he went to the International Formula 3000 series, where he ended ninth in the championship. Coulthard joined Pacific Racing for 1993, winning one race and finished third in the season. For the TWR Jaguar Racing team, he competed in the 24 Hours of Le Mans alongside John Nielsen and David Brabham.

F1 debut and teams

During the years 1993 and 1994, Coulthard worked as an official test driver for the Williams Grand Prix Engineering team. After Ayrton Senna’s death in the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix, a racing seat became available. Coulthard qualified seventh for his first race in Spain and was on track to win a point when his engine failed 34 laps from the finish. He followed that up with a fifth-place finish in Canada, giving him his first points.

In 2001, his best season, Coulthard scored forty points in the first seven races, including victories in Brazil and Austria. He retired for the first time this season in Canada, as his car encountered engine problems while running in fourth place. Coulthard bounced back from his non-finish with a podium at the Nürburgring and fourth place in France. Coulthard had three more retirements and four more podium finishes in the last seven races, which took place in Hungary, Belgium, the United States, and Japan. Overall, Coulthard finished second in the Drivers’ Championship for the first time in his career, 58 points behind World Champion Michael Schumacher.
