Pierre Gasly who has won one Grand Prix in F1 has a contract with AlphaTauri until the end of 2023, and the frenchman stated earlier this year that 2022 would most likely be his last chance to prove he deserved to be promoted back to Red Bull after being demoted to AlphaTauri during the 2019 season. Helmut Marko feels Pierre Gasly has no choice but to stay with AlphaTauri after Red Bull ruled out a future comeback by extending Sergio Perez’s Formula One contract.

Gasly in AlphaTauri

Pierre Gasly was axed from Red Bull and demoted to AlphaTauri following his poor performance in the 2019 season. Since then Gasly matured as a Formula One driver and capably commanded the Faenza-based squad since his return to AlphaTauri. He won his first Formula One race with the team in the 2020 Italian Grand Prix, and he also finished on the podium in the 2019 Brazilian GP and the 2021 Azerbaijan GP.

Red Bull has shut the door

Following Sergio Perez’s victory at the Monaco Grand Prix last week, Red Bull announced a two-year contract extension for the Mexican, keeping him with the team until at least the conclusion of the 2024 season. This means that Gasly will be unable to return to Red Bull when his current contract ends as a result of the ruling. Checo since his inclusion in the squad has proved his mettle every now and then showing his skills and experience.

Nothing better than AlphaTauri for Gasly

Even if Red Bull opted to let Gasly depart before the conclusion of his contract, Marko believes the Frenchman would not be able to find a better seat. “Before the signing, of course, I spoke to Gasly, explained the situation to him and, yes, we’ll just have to see what happens with Gasly after ’23. I don’t think there is any alternative for him at the moment that would be significantly better than AlphaTauri.”

With the current performance of both the AlphaTauri drivers it is very likely that AlphaTauri would end up retaining both Gasly and team-mate Yuki Tsunoda next year, with Red Bull juniors having to wait longer for a possible opening. The current drivers look set until obviously there is a situation where Coronavirus or other external factors play a role.
