According to Ian Holmes, director of media rights for Formula One, one of the key drivers behind the launch of the sport’s TV streaming service F1 TV in India is the nation’s “very strong mobile market.” Since 2011 to 2013, India has hosted Formula One races at the Buddh International Circuit, which has helped the sport gain popularity in the nation. In recent years, Formula One races were broadcast in India by Star Sports and streamed on Hotstar. Fans will have access to cameras mounted on the cars of 20 drivers through F1 TV, which will debut in India prior to the 2023 season as per a report in Inside Sport. Fans will also have access to the traditional broadcast feed for all race weekends, including practise sessions, qualifying sessions, races, and sprint events.

“India is a connected market, it’s a sophisticated market, it’s a very strong mobile market,” Holmes said. “In terms of familiarity with digital rights content being through non-traditional channels and platforms, that exists in India, so that was attractive to us. We may seek to do a more sort of traditional linear type deal in due course, but we’re very comfortable and confident with F1 TV. There are a lot of very knowledgeable and passionate fans in India.”

Drive to Survive pays off

In part because of the Netflix docuseries “Drive to Survive,” Formula One’s popularity has recently increased significantly on a global scale. Holmes attributes this increase in popularity to the show’s success in drawing younger viewers and more women to the sport. “It really has been a lot more popular than I think anyone imagined and seems to go from strength to strength,” Holmes said.

“It’s a double whammy. It’s not just bringing in more fans, it’s also about who those fans are and the value of those fans with regard to the demographic. Over the last sort of four or five years, we as a business have certainly have grown our resources and our commitment to the sport, in terms of spending money and resources,”

“We have consciously worked hard to push out ever more content on social. I think the on track action has certainly been super exciting. We’ve got some new races, Miami last year and everyone is very excited about Las Vegas this year. We’re working hard to appeal to a broader section of fans rather than the traditional avid petrol head, who are brilliant, but we want to expand our offering.”

Stroll set to miss pre-season

Prior to this week’s test, which starts on Thursday, Stroll was practising on his bicycle when he experienced a “small mishap,” according to the organisation. With the last chance teams and drivers have to test their new cars before the start of the championship, missing testing threatens to seriously jeopardise Stroll’s preparation for the 2023 season. Six days following the end of testing, practise for the season-opening race will start at the same circuit. Stroll acknowledged, “I had an unfortunate mishap while working out on my bike in preparation for the season. “I’m determined to get back behind the wheel, and I’m looking forward to the upcoming season with the team. I’m driven to recover as rapidly as I can from this setback.
