Although Mick Schumacher may one day want to race for Mercedes as his father Michael Schumacher did, the German seemed to get ahead of himself in Montreal. At the Canadian Grand Prix, he was seen on camera casually strolling inside the Silver Arrows’ garage, much to Toto Wolff’s dismay. When Mick Schumacher, the driver of Haas, showed up in the Silver Arrows’ garage in Montreal over the weekend, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff was perplexed.

The lost kid

During his father’s career, Schumacher Jr. was a frequent on the paddock and has even spoken about fishing outside the rear of the Mercedes garage at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. However, the Haas driver looked to have forgotten his place after going inside the opposition team’s headquarters this past weekend. Mercedes CEO Wolff didn’t seem thrilled with the visitor, who may have had a more visceral reaction if it hadn’t been for his family ties. Schumacher can be seen dodging among bystanders before asking for instructions and heading further into hostile territory.

Toto did not appreciate that

The incursion was filmed by German photographer Paul Ripke, who can be heard asking an engineer “what’s going on” before the camera pans to an indifferent Wolff. The Austrian follows Schumacher’s movements but returns his focus to the racetrack when he notices the camera’s gaze. Schumacher should be more cautious in the paddock in the future, according to superstition, after retiring for the second time in three races at the Canadian GP. In one and a half seasons as an F1 driver, as his current contract expires at the end of 2022.

The Ferrari connection

Schumacher’s presence would not have been desired despite his father’s connections to Mercedes since Haas are more intimately associated with Ferrari, where his father won five consecutive world championships. Although Hamilton and George Russell came in third and fourth, respectively, it wasn’t all terrible news for Wolff in Montreal. Hamilton finished on the podium for the second time this season and for the first time since the Bahrain Grand Prix in March with that result.

Both British Mercedes drivers will be aiming for their first wins of the season on their home soil, with the British Grand Prix coming up on July 3.
