According to Motorsport.com, Haas’ Mick Schumacher is at the top of Aston Martin’s list to replace Sebastian Vettel. Aston Martin has had a rocky start to the 2022 season and new regulatory regime, with the Silverstone team presently sitting in ninth place in the Constructors’ Championship after six points in as many rounds. The team created quite a commotion when they presented the updated AMR22 at the Spanish Grand Prix, a car that soon drew the attention of Red Bull, and allegedly the FIA before that, due to its resemblance to the RB18.

Vettel reportedly set to leave after 2022

However, in Barcelona, both Vettel and Lance Stroll missed out on points despite the upgrade. There is also mounting doubt about Vettel’s future with the team, with the four-time World Champion requiring evidence of significant progress before committing beyond this season. According to Motorsport.com, it’s becoming increasingly likely that Vettel will leave Aston Martin and Formula One at the end of 2022.

If Vettel leaves, it has already been reported that Aston Martin team owner Lawrence Stroll is keen to take in two-time World Champion Fernando Alonso, who has yet to sign a contract extension at Alpine beyond this season. However, according to Motorsport.com, a new candidate has entered the conversation: Schumacher.

Business strategy

According to the report, Aston Martin is looking to boost its European sales by focusing on the German market, so having a driver from that country, with the surname of its most famous racing driver, would be a good marketing tool in those efforts.

Aston Martin, predictably, has not moved to confirm Schumacher is at the top of their list for 2023, according to the story. Of course, Schumacher’s contract with Haas is a little more involved than most, as it is a two-way agreement that includes him as a member of the Ferrari Driver Academy. According to Motorsport.com, Haas is the only Formula One team that Ferrari can offer Schumacher a slot, which simplifies the situation.
