The new track on which the Miami GP will be held is almost finished, according to the organisers. The Miami International Autodrome, which is centred on Hard Rock Stadium, is said to be “95 percent complete.” The first Miami Grand Prix will take place on May 6th-8th, following the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix this weekend. Following the race’s announcement one year ago yesterday, the event’s CEO Richard Cregan stated that they are “in the final stages” of completing the track.

“We are delighted with the progress we have made and it’s a huge credit to the hard work of the team here in Miami, in consultation with both Formula 1 and the FIA, to get this circuit finished in a tight timeline,” said Cregan.

“We have tried to create a track that drivers love to race on and a campus that offers unique, best-in-class fan experiences and we can’t wait for the first weekend in May to be here.”

Three straights and a continuous 1.28-kilometer acceleration zone will be included in the 5.41-kilometer, 19-turn circuit. It will most likely have three DRS zones. 24,000 tonnes of asphalt and 11,000 metres of concrete barriers and debris fences were used to construct the circuit.

“There has been no compromise on any aspect of the circuit design or quality of construction,” said Cregan. “In my experience of working with new venues over the years, I’ve never seen as much effort on perfecting the surface of the track as we have done in Miami. Everything was exactly per the design, and everyone involved in construction has done an incredible job.”

Miami GP here for the decade

The Miami Grand Prix at Hard Rock Stadium will join the 2022 FIA Formula One World Championship under a 10-year deal. The exact date of the race on the 2022 calendar will be announced later. It will become the country’s second race on the schedule after the United States GP in Austin. The circuit will be 5.41km and have 19 corners, with three straights and the potential for three DRS zones. The estimated top speed is 320km/h.

What will be more interesting is that Hard Rock Stadium, which is home of the NFL’s Miami Dolphins, will sit at the heart of the circuit. Stefano Domenicali, President and CEO of Formula 1, said: “We are thrilled to announce that Formula 1 will be racing in Miami beginning in 2022.”

“The US is a key growth market for us, and we are greatly encouraged by our growing reach in the US which will be further supported by this exciting second race. We will be working closely with the team from Hard Rock Stadium and the FIA to ensure the circuit delivers sensational racing but also leaves a positive and lasting contribution for the people in the local community.”

“We are grateful to our fans, the Miami Gardens elected officials, and the local tourism industry for their patience and support throughout this process. We are looking forward to bringing the greatest racing spectacle on the planet to Miami for the first time in our sport’s history.”
