Ralf Schumacher has advised Max Verstappen to look at Sergio Perez’s victory in Monaco as an opportunity to learn from his teammate. In Monte Carlo, the Mexican won for the third time in his career and outperformed his teammate throughout the weekend. Perez was faster in all practise sessions and qualifying, despite crashing and denying Verstappen a last drive, but he carried that speed into the race and took advantage of Ferrari’s blunder. While there is no doubt that Verstappen is Red Bull’s number one driver and one of the most gifted on the grid, the Dutchman has been urged to study Perez’s performance to see what he can learn after failing to get the most out of the RB18 thus far.

“He [Perez] has come close to Verstappen and Charles Leclerc in the drivers’ standings as a result,” Schumacher said as per motorsport.com. “There could be a three-man fight. I just don’t think Sergio has the consistency of Verstappen. In Monaco he was the better driver. Max should see this as an opportunity to learn things from his teammate. Max has a very aggressive style and has done well with heavier cars in the past. However, the new concept suits Sergio more. If a driver is good at saving tyres, he can get more out of the car. Max should try to apply Sergio’s driving style to certain parts of the track and maybe take one or two corners a little slower.”

On Ferrari’s Monaco blunder

Perez drew within 15 points of his teammate in the Drivers’ Standings, and six points behind Ferrari’s Leclerc, with the victory. Schumacher had harsh words for his brother’s previous team, who used a pit strategy that cost Leclerc the race win. If the squad wanted to stay in contention for both titles, the 46-year-old stressed they needed to learn from their mistakes.

“This is a situation they haven’t had for a number of years,” Schumacher said. “Red Bull has actually learned a lot in the last few years because of the tough battle with Mercedes. They were always very strong strategically, Red Bull is benefiting from that now.”

Perez signs Red Bull contract extension

Sergio Perez had reason to rejoice just two days after winning his first Monaco Grand Prix. Red Bull has confirmed that he will remain with Max Verstappen until the end of 2024. Last season, the Mexican joined Red Bull and finished fourth in the drivers’ standings with one victory – in Azerbaijan – and four more podiums. He’s pushed it up a notch this season, with three second-place results to go along with his Monaco victory, and he’s now in third place, just 15 points behind leader Verstappen. Perez signed a two-year contract extension with Red Bull on Tuesday, with the Mexican signing the contract during the race weekend in Monaco.
