Gasly: The 2022 Formula One season fell 'very far short' of AlphaTauri's hopes

After slipping to ninth place in the standings, Pierre Gasly believes 2022 fell "very far short" of AlphaTauri's ambitions going into the Formula 1 season.

With 142 points and sixth place in the constructors’ standings, Gasly guided AlphaTauri to its highest points total in an F1 season up until 2021. This was the team’s best season overall, taking into account its time racing as Toro Rosso. However, the team had trouble utilising the new rules and dropped to ninth place in 2022, scoring just 35 points between teammate Yuki Tsunoda and Gasly. Gasly believed it was “not easy” to maximise the potential of the AT03 car given its troubles and that it was “impossible to truly evaluate” how much progress he had achieved through such a challenging season.

Toughest season

Since making his Formula One debut, Gasly has gone without a podium for just the second full season. The Frenchman’s best finish was fifth in Azerbaijan. Gasly signed a contract to join Alpine in 2023, taking the place of the Aston Martin-bound Fernando Alonso, and it was his final season with AlphaTauri. When asked if this was the team’s Faenza-based team’s toughest season, Gasly responded, “In a way, maybe yes, considering that I have more experience and I have experienced good and less good [times], more or less success with the team.

Sadly, we were unable to take advantage of this chance this year due to the change in legislation. There were undoubtedly some issues as a result of that, but in all fairness, I believe some other teams performed better than we did. “This change didn’t actually give us our opportunities.”
