Gasly: If the penalty system does not improve, more F1 drivers may face bans

Pierre Gasly has stated that he is not the only driver on the verge of a race ban as a result of the Formula One penalty points system.

He argues that the existing structure should be changed to accommodate for the increased number of events on the 2023 calendar, including the six sprints. The Frenchman presently has 10 points, and if he gets 12 before dropping his earliest score in late May, he might face a racing ban. Lance Stroll has eight points, Alex Albon has seven, and Fernando Alonso has six, all of which are close to the maximum. All, though, will score their first goals early in the 2023 season. Daniel Ricciardo, who will not participate in 2023, also scored eight points this year.

Gasly received 10 points for a variety of offences, including leaving an excessive distance behind the safety car in Austin. He has been advocating for a system overhaul for several months. “I try not to think since I don’t perceive myself as a stupid or risky driver,” he explained. “I try to be cautious with all the, let’s say, ridiculous penalty points you could lose with processes and such.” “So I try to stay on top of it.” I believe my approach to racing has been consistent. And I really hope we can evaluate the entire system over the winter, since I don’t think I’ll be the only one in difficulty.

More opportunities

Gasly emphasised that the matter is frequently discussed inside the GPDA, with the extended calendar causing worry because it creates more opportunity to gain points. It would be a tragedy to have four or five racing drivers disqualified for a race and a championship with some men missing a race.” “We always discuss it. And other guys are only four points behind with 24 races and six sprints, for a total of 30 races per year, but when it was first established, we only had 19 or 20 events. Clearly, getting additional points on this licence will make sense. “However, I trust the FIA will investigate this and find measures to make it more equitable for everyone.””
