Formula E has unveiled its new look for the future and unveiled the Gen3 race car ahead of this weekend’s Monaco E-Prix. Next season, the latest iteration of the all-electric racer will make its competitive debut, and it is expected to be more powerful, faster, and efficient than its predecessor, with an even greater focus on sustainability. Street races are a staple of Formula E, which is geared toward bringing all-electric racing to the masses in city centres. As a result, the championship has been designed and optimized specifically for street racing.

One of a kind

It’s the first formula car with front and rear powertrains, with the front 250kW motor working in tandem with the rear 350kW motor. It also doubles the regenerative capability of current Gen2 cars, with a combined 600kW. Regenerative braking will generate more than 40% of the energy used in a race. Because of the front powertrain’s regenerative capability, rear hydraulic brakes are no longer required.

What is the difference between Gen2 and Gen3 cars?

In comparison to the current Gen2 cars, which have a power output of 250kW (340hp), the new Gen3 cars will have a power output of 350kW. (476hp). It’s also significantly lighter, weighing only 760 kilograms (excluding the drivers). All of this translates to a top speed of 320 kilometers per hour. According to Formula E, electric motors can convert 95 percent of their energy into mechanical power; by comparison, a comparable internal combustion engine is said to have a power efficiency of 40 percent. The new car is also narrower and has a shorter wheelbase, which Formula E hopes will result in more competitive racing.

The battle isn’t just on the track; with the introduction of the Gen3 cars, the focus has shifted to software engineering as an area where teams can compete for key performance gains. Performance enhancements will be delivered as software updates to the vehicle’s operating system.

Sustainability of the future

The Gen3 cars, according to Formula E CEO Jamie Reigle, are setting the benchmark for performance, efficiency, and sustainability without compromise in motorsport. Since its inception, the championship has been the first global sport to be certified as having a net zero carbon footprint, and now even more progress has been made in terms of sustainability. The Gen3 batteries are touted as the most advanced and long-lasting batteries ever created. They will use minerals sourced from sustainable sources, and the battery cells will be reused and recycled at the end of their lifecycle. The new tyres will be made up of 26% natural rubber and recycled fibres, and will be recycled completely after the races.

Manufacturers hop on

Seven manufacturers have committed to the Gen3 era of Formula E, including Mahindra Racing from India, as well as Jaguar, DS Automobiles, Nissan, Porsche, and NIO 333 from other countries. Maserati will compete in Formula E for the first time next year, partnering with Venturi Racing. Mercedes EQ will leave the championship at the end of this season, but McLaren may buy the team. Season 9, which will usher in the Gen3 era, has been postponed in order to give the teams more time to prepare, and will now begin in January 2023. A Formula E race will most likely take place next year, between January and March 2023, at a new street circuit in Hyderabad.
