F1 qualifying results: Max Verstappen takes pole for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix

Max Verstappen of Red Bull secured pole position for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the 22nd and final round of the 2022 F1 World Championship.

After the one-hour qualifying session, which is divided into three segments with five cars knocked out in Q1 and Q2 before the top-10 shootout in Q3, Verstappen will start ahead of teammate Sergio Perez and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen won the pole position for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the 22nd and final round of the 2022 F1 World Championship.

What happened in Abu Dhabi Grand Prix Q1?

Perez set the early pace at 1m24.820s, but Verstappen took P1 by 0.066s at 1m24.754s. Carlos Sainz of Ferrari finished third, three tenths slower than the leaders but a tenth ahead of teammate Charles Leclerc. Brazilian GP poleman Kevin Magnussen (Haas), Pierre Gasly (AlphaTauri), Valtteri Bottas (Alfa Romeo), and the Williams duo of Alex Albon and Nicholas Latifi all failed at the first hurdle.

Leclerc set the first time of 1m25.345s, but Sainz beat him by three tenths. Verstappen took the lead with 1m24.862s, but Perez quickly overtook him with 1m24.419s, more over four tenths faster. After the first runs, Hamilton was the best of the others, 0.355s down in P2 with a 1m24.774s. On the final runs, Leclerc was second quickest on 1m24.517s, with Sainz third a tenth slower. At this time, Fernando Alonso (Alpine), Yuki Tsunoda (AlphaTauri), Mick Schumacher (in his final qualifying session for Haas), Lance Stroll (Aston Martin), and Zhou Guanyu were all eliminated (Alfa Romeo).

Sainz took provisional pole with 1m24.281s on the first run, ahead of Perez – who had a big moment at the final corner – and Leclerc. Verstappen then took the lead with a lap of 1m23.988s, nearly three tenths faster than the others. Verstappen improved to 1m23.824s on the last laps and was joined on the front row by Perez, who was 0.228s slower. Leclerc finished third in 1m24.092s, ahead of Sainz, who did not improve on his penultimate lap. Hamilton moved up to fifth place with a time of 1m24.508s. Lando Norris (McLaren), Esteban Ocon (Alpine), Sebastian Vettel (ninth for his final GP with Aston Martin), and Daniel Ricciardo (McLaren, who has a three-place grid penalty for his collision with Magnussen) will start ahead of George Russell.
