In connection with his ‘behaviour during the drivers’ meeting’ at the 2022 F1 Austrian Grand Prix, Sebastian Vettel has been called before the stewards. After the sprint race on Saturday afternoon, stewards issued a paper stating that Vettel was needed to appear before them at 6 o’clock local time for allegedly violating both Article 20.1 of the FIA Formula One Sporting Regulations and Article 12.2.1 f) of the International Sporting Code. This relates to conduct at the drivers’ meeting, which was held at the Red Bull Ring on Friday after qualifying.

The ISC article states “any words, deeds or writings that have caused moral injury or loss to the FIA, its bodies, its members or its executive officers, and more generally on the interest of motorsport and on the values defended by the FIA” as a potential breach of the rules.

Vettel, a four-time world champion, has so far had a disappointing Austrian Grand Prix weekend. Before the Aston Martin driver was thrown into the gravel while battling Alex Albon’s Williams in the sprint race on Saturday afternoon, Vettel was eliminated from Q1 with the slowest time. The German made it back to the track but chose to end the race. As a result, he will start 19th in Sunday’s race.

Verstappen wins Austria sprint

Max Verstappen triumphed in the Formula One Sprint race at the Red Bull Ring, defeating Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz in their rival Ferraris. With the victory, Verstappen earned the pole position for Sunday’s Austrian Grand Prix. Verstappen dominated Friday night qualifying, which saw both Mercedes crash out in Q3, dropping his Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez to P13 on the starting row for this Sprint. With this brand-new Sprint format for 2022, the top eight finishers receive points rather than the top three.

Before Zhou Guanyu’s brief stoppage at the final corner approaching the grid prompted a second formation lap and forced the Alfa Romeo driver to start from the pits, yellow flags were displayed during the formation lap when Fernando Alonso’s Alpine failed to get off the grid, forcing him out of the race. In order to ultimately start a Sprint with 23 rather than 24 laps, the remaining 18 cars had to negotiate through an orange smoke haze.
