After a hiatus of two years, Albert Park is set to host the highly anticipated 2022 Australian Grand Prix. The track has undergone a number of changes since the last time F1 cars zoomed on its asphalt. The number of turns has been reduced to 14 from 16 and they have also been made wider for an improved racing experience for the drivers. The track is not the only thing that has undergone some changes, however. Brand new technical regulations and a budget cap introduced by the FIA have seen a new breed of cars on the grid and with some teams struggling to come to terms with them, the Melbourne crowd will surely be in for a treat.

There have been a number of great drivers who have been winners on multiple occasions at Albert Park. Fortunately, some of them will be on the grid in the 2022 season as well. Here is a look at the current F1 drivers with the most Australian GP wins.

Sebastian Vettel – 3

The current Aston Martin driver is the most successful on the grid when it comes to the Australian GP. Vettel has been victorious in the race on three occasions, twice with Ferrari in 2017 and 2018, and once with Red Bull Racing in 2011. Melbourne will be host to the German’s first race this season as he was not able to participate in Bahrain and Jeddah due to COVID-19. Vettel’s team, Aston Martin has struggled in the opening two races but the four-time world champion will be looking to bring about a positive impact.

Lewis Hamilton – 2

Despite having seven world titles to his name, Lewis Hamilton has managed to win at Albert Park only twice in his career Once was in 2008 with McLaren and the second was with Mercedes in 2015. It has not been a race that has historically seen him win, but the Brit will aim to do so in 2022. Mercedes’ challenger this season has been far from perfect, with the number of issues cropping up in the first couple of races. Reliability and speed seem to be the more evident ones at the moment but the team would gladly take a double points finish at this point.

Fernando Alonso and Valterri Bottas – 1 each

Two-time world champion and F1 legend Fernando Alonso is the oldest driver on the grid this season. The Spaniard has won the Australian GP only once in his career. That win came in 2006 with Renault. Alonso is with Alpine for 2022 and will be looking to finish high in Melbourne.

Former Mercedes and current Alfa Romeo driver Valterri Bottas was the winner of the last race that was held at Albert Park in 2019. Bottas, a Mercedes driver at the time, won his very first Australian GP that year. The Finn now partners rookie Guanyu Zhou at Alfa Romeo.
