Albon: With the proper balance, Williams' 2022 vehicle could have been 'far quicker'

Alex Albon thinks the Williams 2022 Formula 1 vehicle might have been "far quicker" if the balance flaws that caused it to be "tied in" at some courses had been fixed.

Albon spent 2021 in a reserve and development position at Red Bull before making his F1 comeback with Williams last year. He swiftly established himself as the team captain at Grove. The Anglo-Thai driver earned plaudits for his efforts during the season and had a high finish of ninth in Miami along with points finishes in Australia and Belgium. However, Williams found it difficult to consistently match up with the other midfield teams, which caused it to fall to last in the constructors’ championship.

Balance Issues

The FW44 car’s aero sensitivity turned out to be one of its main flaws, and Albon and teammate Nicholas Latifi battled balancing concerns all season. Albon was optimistic that if these problems could be resolved, considerably more pace would be unlocked. Albon told Motorsport.com, “It’s a hard one because the car can be lot quicker with the appropriate balance to it. “I feel that we’re now quite constrained in our performance just due to the way we’re tied down in some locations. Certain songs, like Brazil or Mexico, truly expose us.

Contract extension

Williams concluded the year with eight points, which put it 27 points behind AlphaTauri in ninth place, but it decided to stop working on the FW44 when it appeared certain to place 10th. It caused the 2023 car, which will be piloted by Albon and his new colleague Logan Sargeant, a Formula 2 graduate, to receive early attention. Albon extended his contract with Williams for a number of years in 2022, which he said offered him the security he needed to concentrate more on guiding the team’s car development in the proper way.
