Wordle, the enormously famous online puzzle, has been credited with keeping people sane around the world during the pandemic’s ravages. However, it has now been hailed as a potential lifesaver after providing the information that assisted in the escape of an 80-year-old woman from a 20-hour hostage incident at her house.

Denyse Holt, a retired teacher, was imprisoned in her basement of her Illinois home after being awakened in the middle of the night by a naked, knife-wielding invader.

After the shivering man got into her bed, he threatened to “cut her” if she yelled before backing down from his threats and begging her to help warm him up in the bath.

Holt was afraid for her life after the man trapped in her basement without food or medication.

She attempted to rally herself and practised exercises to keep herself going, according to the Washington Post. She thought to herself: “I don’t want to die like this, and I don’t want my kids to hear that their mother was murdered.”

Help was on the way, due in part to her love of Wordle, the popular word game in which players are given six guesses to figure out a five-letter word.

The oldest of her two kids, thousands of miles away on the west coast, was upset that her mother had not sent over her Wordle score as she always did each day.

“I didn’t send my older daughter a Wordle in the morning. And that was disconcerting to her,” Holt told Chicago’s WBBM.

When the worried siblings tried to call their mother on her landline but were told it was disconnected, they sought assistance from a neighbour.

Despite the fact that Holt’s car was still in the drive, he received no response at the door and contacted the cops. They heard her exclaim “I’m here!” as they walked around. I’ve arrived! I’m in the basement!” she exclaimed, and she was set free.

A 32-year-old guy was also apprehended in an upstairs bedroom. They assumed he had gone through a mental health crisis.
